Radeon RX 9070 XT is Allegedly Close to RTX 4080 in Gaming Performance, Can Consume 70W Higher on Custom Editions

Great news if it's true!

AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT Reportedly Features up to 3.1 GHz of Boost Clock but Allows Pushing it Further Significantly

RX 9070 XT

AMD’s upcoming Radeon RX 9070 XT is pretty popular among gamers and PC hardware enthusiasts these days since no one exactly knows how much prowess this new card brings to the table. This gets particularly more intriguing when we compare its rumored performance against its rivals from NVIDIA.

Recently, I reported that the RX 9070 XT is somewhere in between the Radeon RX 7900 GRE and RX 7900 XT from the RDNA 3 lineup. The synthetic performance looked pretty close to the RX 7900 GRE but was nowhere near the RX 7900 XT or NVIDIA’s RTX 4070 Ti and Super editions. The latest rumors suggest that the RX 9070 XT is closer to the RTX 4080, and this is specifically in gaming as reported by the prominent leaker “zhangzhonghao” from Chiphell forums.

RX 9070 XT RTX 4080 5 percent performance

Not only did the leaker say that the GPU is much stronger than the RX 7900 GRE but he also gave us a sneak peek at the clock speed and TBP of the card. As per him, the RX 9070 is within 5% of the RTX 4080’s gaming performance, which coincides with the early rumors. Take this with a grain of salt as we are yet to see such proofs in the form of real benchmark screenshots or graphs. At the moment, we only have the Time Spy score of the 9070 XT, which cannot be accurately translated into the gaming performance.

Nonetheless, it offers some hope to the GPU competition in the mid-range and high-end GPU category, particularly when NVIDIA is bringing a much more powerful RTX 5080 GPU with 30 Gbps of memory speed.

HXL RX 9070 XT specs leak

As for the specs, the Radeon RX 9070 XT is expected to bring a base clock of 2.8 GHz and a boost clock of up to 3.1 GHz on the reference edition (via @9550pro). The boost clock on the custom editions from AMD’s board partners can be 3.1 GHz quite easily since it is rumored that these editions can feature up to 330W of TBP, which is a 22% increase over the reference design featuring 260W of TBP.

RX 9070 XT 330W

This makes the RX 9070 XT even more power-hungry than the RTX 5070 Ti, which supposedly brings 300W of TBP. I hope that in the coming days, we can see some more positive stuff related to the RX 9070 XT card before it launches at CES 2025.
