Even though we have been getting huge performance uplifts in laptop CPUs recently, this is not true with laptop graphics cards. While both Nvidia and AMD are achieving some decent performance gains with the RTX 40 and RX 7000 GPUs, the recent RTX 4070 laptop benchmark is a little bit disappointing.
The laptop RTX 4060 was seen doing fine as it consistently delivered the performance between a desktop RTX 3060 and 3060 Ti, the RTX 4070 is not that far away from the 4060. Wccftech’s writer Hassan Mujtaba recently shared a screenshot from a Chinese website Mechrevo that shows the performance comparison between the laptop RTX 4060 and 4070 to the previous gen which shows that the RTX 4070 is just 11 to 15% faster than the 3070 in 3DMark tests.
You have to ignore the graph representation because the 11% and 15% performance uplift looks like 200% which looks like a deliberate attempt to show RTX 4070 is a good GPU. Now I know that 3DMark is not equivalent to gaming but it still gives us a rough idea of how a GPU may perform in video games.
From Mechrevo laptop listing:
🟢4070 vs 3070 = +15% Improvement in Time Spy
🟢4070 vs 3070 = +11% Improvement in Fire Strike pic.twitter.com/0LXbTMGEu4— Hassan Mujtaba (@hms1193) February 18, 2023
This means that if this performance uplift is similar in gaming, then the RTX 4070 laptops will provide significantly inferior value because the 3070 laptops can be found for as low as $1200 but the 4070 laptops will cost at least $1800-$2000 at the minimum. This means that for 50% more price, you are getting just 15% more performance in gaming.
Now the rest is up to the users who may prefer a 4070 laptop due to a faster processor. Still, if that’s the case, then a 4060 laptop with an i9 should be a wiser choice because it will still give a decent 1080p gaming performance that is comparable to the laptop RTX 3070 Ti and will also cost less.
