AMD Executive Suggests ‘Comparable’ Gaming Performance of Higher-End Ryzen 9000X3D CPUs to Ryzen 9800X3D
AMD’s recently unveiled higher-end Zen 5 desktop CPUs will be succeeding the current high-end X3D chips from the Zen 4 lineup. These are the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D, aimed at replacing Ryzen 7950X3D and 7900X3D respectively, offering better productivity and gaming performance. As you may have guessed, the newer chips will indeed be as powerful as the Ryzen 7 9800X3D in ‘gaming’.
Video Gamer reports that in an interview, AMD’s Product and Business Development Manager, Martijn Boonstra, has confirmed that both the higher-end Ryzen 9000X3D CPUs will be equivalent to the 9800X3D in gaming. As per the exact wording, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D will…
“provide similar overall gaming performance to the 9800X3D”
Moreover, the executive also confirmed that there will be scenarios where these CPUs will perform slightly better due to having more cores and threads. Of course, there will be instances where the 9800X3D will take a slight lead.
“There will be some games that perform a bit better (if the game engine utilizes more cores and threads), and some games will perform a little worse (if the game engine favors a 1CCD configuration), but on the whole the experience is comparable.“
This is exactly how it went with the previous gen Ryzen 9 7950X3D and Ryzen 9 7900X3D when compared to Ryzen 7 7800X3D in gaming. The Ryzen 9 7950X3D, in particular, was slightly ahead of the 7800X3D in a few instances but remained overall comparable. However, the 7900X3D was beaten by both these chips due to boasting only 6 cores on individual CCDs. The problem with the 6+6 Core configuration was due to fewer cores on the CCD that contained the 3D V-Cache, which happened to worsen the gaming performance of 7900X3D.
I expect the 9900X3D to follow a similar path since the core configuration hasn’t changed. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D should be leading the charts as the new gaming champions as both of them feature 8 cores on the CCD that contain the extra L3 cache. However, do keep in mind that the Ryzen 9 9950X3D is an enthusiast chip that is made for leading productivity performance apart from gaming. Ryzen 9800X3D, on the other hand, is specifically made for the best possible gaming performance for money.
