While there are many options to install a graphics driver, the universal method is already provided by Microsoft in Windows 10. Unlike the manual method where you have to search online and find drivers for your graphics card, Windows 10 can let you automatically update to the latest drivers.
I will show you how you can do this in a couple of steps and will also verify how correct it is in terms of updating to the latest drivers.
Step 1:- The first step is to right-click on This PC and click on Manage.
Now head to the Device Manager. Expand the Display adapters and select your GPU you want to update the drivers for.
Step 2:- Right-click on the GPU and click on Properties. Note down the current driver version before updating to confirm that your driver is updated after you do the full process.
Step 3:- Click on Update Driver and it will be asked if you want to search the drivers online or choose a file for update.
Select Search automatically for updated driver software
Now your PC will take a few minutes to search for the drivers and will install the latest driver. Note down the latest driver version(Optional).
Step 4:- Now it’s time to see if the driver is latest or not. Head to the official website of your GPU. In my case, the GPU is Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050. So, I will go to Nvidia Geforce website and select my GPU to download the latest driver for it.
After downloading, install the driver and check the current version by going to the properties of your GPU again from the Device Manager. In my case, the driver version was newer than what Microsoft Windows 10 could update to.
You can check the dates of both the versions. By updating through the Windows 10 Device Manager, Windows updated to the driver which was released on 7th May 2020 while the manual method of going to the manufacturer’s website updated the driver to the version which was released on 14th of September 2020.
So, the Windows 10 method is still quite good considering that you don’t have to search for the drivers manually and it is a good option for the newbies.
